Le Briciole

Recently at a table covered in crumbs in a restaurant:

Maddy: Do you know how to say crumbs in Italiano?
Me: No idea.
Maddy: Briciole. (with the most perfectly rolled R)

How you like that vocabulary word of the day? Pronounced Bree-cho-lay. (Well, close enough, anyway.)

She still lacks confidence. A new Italian friend of mine upon meeting Maddy for the first time asked her if she spoke Italian. Maddy answered without hesitation: "NO!" and then buried her head in my legs, refusing to speak English or Italian.

Tell me, then, Sweet Pea, how do you know the word briciole? I don't think it came from Dora the Great Explorer. How come you can converse just fine when you so desire? It's okay if it isn't perfect. Perfectly okay, Sweet Pea. (Only Momma needs to be perfect :)
