Open Air Market in Vicenza

We spent the morning in an open air market in Vicenza. A bit different from the regularly scheduled Thursday market, this special holiday edition also includes vendors of food goods from other areas of the country.

I enjoy the colors most of all.

Markets are also great for people-watching. We were a bit early today and beat the true crowd of characters. Probably the most interesting this morning was the Vicenza staple -- signore in furs. Granted, it was pretty darn cold out there this morning; though, sometimes it seems that there is day on the calendar marked "Start Wearing the Furs," as they come out no matter the temperature -- similar to the "No Black Shoes after Labor Day" rule.

Is that still a rule? I'm not much of a fashionista. I think that when I'm a senior I will be joining the signore in fur, though.

Don't judge! They're so soft, so warm -- the furs, not the old ladies.

I am not exaggerating one little bit. The women in these photos are within a ten foot radius of each other on Corso Palladio. They are indeed everywhere. It seems to be okay here -- like nativities at Christmas.

I think that the sign for the peppers claims that they are as powerful as Viagra.
Hmm. . . i think.

Today we came home with green olives from Bari (just like the ones we once thrived on in Naples), pecorino from Sardegna, and soppressata (think, hog's head cheese) from Tuscany. Maddy also scored a pair of Christmas pajamas -- most likely from China via the port of Naples.

Maddy hates the market scene, but lately she has been a willing photography subject. Today we shamelessly pulled out the stroller for the outing. Yes, we put 4-and-a-half year old in a stroller -- that, too, seems to be okay here.

Don't you just want to eat her up?

If you spent a month or two of pay on a fur coat, I bet you would wear it everyday. Even if it is 40 years old, smells like wet dog and BO, and it is 65 degrees out. That is my fur theory.

Hi Michelle,
I guess the cost of them never occured much to me. Chances are that when I'm a senior my cash will be limited. There goes my fur dream! However, I do have a friend who found a full-length fur at an Italian consignment / thrift store -- okay, it's a beaver, but still -- that would do for me.
