Located within the Julian Alps, roughly 4 hours from our home, Bled is a popular tourist destination for those who revel in the outdoors – the hiking and biking and camping and canoeing types – (admittedly, not exactly us.) We departed with absolutely no expectations, no itinerary, no guide books, no plans – only just a tiny bit of research concerning the local cuisine.
Oh yeah, and no good, detailed map -- after a two-hour (unexpected) drive along the scenic path that took us down a mountainous, curvy-road, with undoubtedly beautiful views (too dark for me to see), and that caused Maddy to vomit – we finally arrived well past 10 pm in Bled at Hotel Berc. ( highly recommend)
The weekend, however, improved with each passing moment; we were lucky to happen upon a rather warm spell that allowed us to enjoy our time and the splendor of fall.
Saturday morning, we walked the path along the glacial Lake Bled.
The path led us to a collection of wooden row boats called “pletna"; we couldn't resist the chance to go out on the water.
Imagine the strength of this man who rows these boats back and forth across the lake all day long.
We explored the tiny island which is home to (you guessed it) a church.
We took pleasure in afternoon naps and novel reading and hanging out – a luxury we haven’t known together in quite some time.
. . . to be continued
