When I describe this uniquely Louisiana phenomenon to friends, most of them contort their faces in speechless disbelief; some will ask a few questions. I always get the impression that they believe that I am telling tall tales. Well, as they say: Seeing is believing!
In South Louisiana (not just New Orleans) there are drive-thru daiquiri places. Common, convenient, and perfectly legal, the little stands dot the landscape welcoming drivers from far and near.

Daiquiris not your thing? Why not try a Cajun Mary? And hey, if by chance you are not into alcohol, there are virgin choices for you: Virgin Hurricane or Virgin Banana Banshee.

My sister and I did stop by one near her home this summer; she's laughing here because she, too, understands the absolute absurdity of this, yet she chooses to partake in the tradition with me.

One Pina Colada & one Cajun Mary coming up!

In case you were wondering. . . we left them in the cup holders until we arrived home 10 minutes later. I'm not sure of the laws?! I do know that this is not one lone renegade place breaking the law; the little shops are quite common & are visited by many. I also know that not much compares to an icy frozen daiquiri on a hot, steamy, Louisiana summer day. Okay. . . well, except maybe for a snowball, that is. . . but that's another post for another day.

OMG! I so love the drive thru daiquiri stands of NOLA!! I loved mixing strawberry and pina colada together- delish! How fun!!!
That is so crazy! Wow is all I can say!
Not just in NOLA... if you're driving through Vidalia, LA... stop by Hammer's Drive-Thru...
At Christmas time, they always have a great Egg Nog Daiquiri... A little sweet for my blood... but, I always have to have one for tradition sake. :-)

I agree with likeschocolate above.
ha ha! we were just talking about this the other day. i lived in NOLA for 7 years and whenever a friend would come to visit, we'd always go to the drive thru to pick up daiquiris after we picked up the friend at the airport.
oh! i had forgotten about the eggnog daiquiris... :D
these pics remind me so much of our old days in the quarters. can you believe we use to go out all night drinking and dancing then go and monitor the act test the next morning. now i could maybe have a couple drinks but that would have to be before 10pm. i'm getting old.
