8: the beach

A Beach on the Tyrrhenean Sea on the Coast of Tuscany

We, my friends, are not beach people. I grew up spending a bit of time each summer at the beaches of the Florida panhandle, but once I became an adult I never sought out visits to the beach (or campground) in any part of the world.

Maddy on that Beach in Tirrenia, Tuscany

And then the child arrived, and she, rightfully so, changed everything. We are slowly turning into (gasp!) beach people. These photos are from a recent trip to a beach in Tuscany, not in my little paese.

American Memorial Day weekend is a perfect time for a visit to an Italian beach. In these parts the season is still a bit early, so the beaches are not crowded yet. . . even on the weekends.

Crystal Clear Cold Water

While we blame the kiddo for the transformation into beach people, I think it may also be because of the relaxation element. Prague and Paris and New Orleans and Naples and Nice are fine; however, traveling and visiting are not exactly relaxing. It is interesting, invigorating, intense . . .yes, yes, yes, but generally draining for us . . . especially in the past five years.

Being buried in the sand, on the other hand, is quite a relaxing event! It takes the load off, doesn't it?

Of course, the final Monday in May is a not a holiday for our Italian hosts; this afforded us the feeling of being on a private beach. Nice.

We, the not-quite-beach people, have scheduled ourselves a beach summer with our family and friends, including Sardegna, Florida, South Carolina, and even Virginia. How did that happen? What might be our favorite at summer's end? I suspect that it may not be what you'd expect! We'll see.

Ho, Ho ! We aren't not so far away ! We never go to the beach during the summer because we don't like it with to many people. I prefer beach on winter, only with the wind !!!

Lovely photos, I love Maddy's face, so happy.
You wont regret your trip to Sardegna, it's such a beautiful place. May I ask where in Sardegna are you going to? We went to the northern part.

Have a great sunny day,

Wonderful photos. I'd love to swim in that clear clean water, then read a book in one of those orange beach chairs :) Enjoy your travels :)

isn't it funny how children make us do all sorts of things we swear we'd never do? :)

I didn't think I was a beach person either, but it's the perfect excuse to do nothing but eat, sleep and eat! These days, I do a bit of culture holiday and a bit of relaxation on a beach, if I can. Your daughter is so cute in these photos!

The beach looks great! I love Italy - I have visited often - beaches in Marche and Sardinia my favourites, but even my Sicillian friend who grew up at the beach says the sea is even better in Puglia!!
