Sagra is Open

Maddy and I eagerly walked down to the church and school for the first evening of the Sagra dei Bisi at about 7 pm last night.

In true American fashion (in Italy), we were among the first to arrive -- even though they were supposed to start serving at 6:30, they weren't quite ready when we arrived past 7. It doesn't upset me any longer. . . . I haven't learned my lesson exactly, though.

A peak at the menu. For those who can't read Italian, this is interesting because parts of it are in the local dialect rather than standard Italian. As I was reading this I was approached by a man (a local that I didn't recognize) who assured me that the prices were excellent, considering the current price of peas.

Maddy and I shared polenta, cheese, risotto with peas, and french fries. You can pretty much expect to find french fries just about anywhere food is offered in Italy, or so it seems to me. It was good, as good as this type of food can be. (I say that as I suffer from an intense craving for zuppa di cozze (mussels) from my favorite trattoria in Pozzuoli.)

The Italian cowboys were present as well because Friday night was the evening with the country music DJ. These two guys are the actual DJ's, who stopped in to eat after setting up their equipment. The one on the left had a shiny belt buckle the size of Maddy's head. Cowboy up!

A bit strange seeing those flags in Lumignano, don't you think? We were, of course, too early for the dancing action. By the time we left at 10, a small group had started, but by then it was too dark for photos with the little camera.

We ran into some friends, and of course, there was lots of this,

and some of this.

Think I'll be able to avoid this part of the sagra this evening? We plan to go with a group of sagra-loving friends.

Yes, it's more than a bit strange. I've never seen Italian cowboys, but then I live in the middle of nowhere, and you are in a lively multicultural setting:)! Have fun tonight.
