Play Ball!

At this moment we three are attending a clinic for the volunteer t-ball coaches.

If you find that quite odd or unbelievable, it's only because you don't know the younger me. You see, I cut my teeth at "the park." In fact, it is safe to say that I spent a large portion of my childhood at the park either as a participant or spectator in some sport or another, and often with my mom as the volunteer coach.

Heck, I even remember my Maw Maw participating in the Gramercy Park volleyball league -- she is lean, tall, and strong-- she brought fear to her opponents at the net. So, while you were at piano or guitar lessons or attending play rehearsal or even visiting a museum, you can bet that I was at the park (or later at the gym or track), loving every minute of it . . . of course, only when I wasn't camping.

So, you see, it's only natural that I introduce Maddy to "the park," and all the wonderful things it can offer a child, even if it's been a while.

I spent my childood playing with friends in the streets of a big city in Northern Italy, not something I could let my kids do now. And I think I moved to the country so that I wouldn't have to take them to the "giardini", a place where in my experience you see the worst Italian parenting. Perhaps we need t-ball coaching!

Francesa,
The parks in Vicenza that we once frequented were most often populated by children with nannies or adoring grandparents, and they were usually quite pleasant. Since we've moved to the "country," we don't have as much of a need for those "giardini." It's nice.
