So the tax is real. We still don't have an accurate estimate of the amount. This is completely frustrating. The law was changed in the last couple of months. It doesn't matter a bit that we entered into a contract with Ghiotto in August, gave the man a ton of money, registered the contract with the city (yet another tax) -- none of that matters. To whine a bit, it doesn't seem fair. But really, what can we do? Well, we could get a false document (the details of which I can't share) to avoid the tax -- yeah, right. Funny thing is that no one would probably ever know the difference. The fact that the tax wouldn't apply to us if we bought in Vicenza city is just ridiculous to me. Oh yeah, we could get a lawyer -- even less likely for us than falsifying documents. We haven't heard great reports on the Italian legal system. (We've been told that there is already a case in the courts -- so let that person fight the fight.)
We also learned of a hidden tax in mortgages. I don't have the details of it just yet, so I'll hold off on complaining about it.
