12: staple food

Ciao,
We are on the road or in the air now, and have just finished a technology-free (camera excluded) 10 day sojourn on the unbelievable island of Sardegna . . . but, a brief moment for a post.

Here is my young one enjoying a plate of pasta con vongole (clams) in Sardegna last week. It's not quite common to see this dish served with a short pasta, but, hey, it's what the girl requested. She later decided she prefers le cozze (mussels) just like her Momma.

I think it's safe to say that such seafood, and certainly the pasta, is a staple in the (Southern) Italian diet.

Also in this picture (in the box) is a bottle of "just for babies" olive oil, a staple in the diet of every Italian baby, I'm told. (Though one friend did confide that while she insisted on the special oil for her first born, her second son was served the same oil as the rest of the family. Shhhhhhh. . . .don't tell the peditrician; it could be a scandal, thus my refusal to name my dear friend. The baby diet is quite a serious affair here.)

Happy Summer,
Dana

Baby olive oil?!? I haven't been lectured on they by my neighbors. But they probably gave up on me a long time ago.

oh, gee... is there a special olive oil for babies there? I didn't know... Just started weaning my little one, our doctor said to add one tsp of extra virgin olive oil to her soup but didn't mention anything about the baby kind o olive oil...

well, I guess, we learn something new every day :) Thank you so much or sharing :)

Un bacio,
Kasia

My husband is the big pasta lover in the family... I imagine that he would get along quite nicely in Italy. I have never heard of special olive oil for babies... sounds interesting. Does it taste the same?

What is the difference in Olive oil for babies? Your daughter is so... cute!! I love how she eats mussels.

I am not sure of the difference in the oils. Purer maybe? I don't know! I've only learned of it recently from 2 Italian girlfriends with babies. Obviously not everyone uses it. . . but these 2 Veneto mamma's do. The concept of adding olive oil to baby food is a bit foreign to me, I must admit; though I am pretty sure that it is prescribed by the doctor as it is my understanding that every part of the diet is prescribed. I'll ask for a taste next time I'm around.

hilarious. i wish that i'd been fed special olive oil as a baby. it is my favorite food of all, and i love that italians are so precise.

your daughter is a beauty...very fun to see her chowing.

Hmm - seafood. I never used to like it till I dated an Italian for a while and was introduced to it....Sardinia really is beautiful. I loved it when I visited....so much history, beautiful beaches and as you say great seafood!

oh... your staples look so elegant! i really love hearing what causes scandals in different cultures - something that wouldn't turn anyone's head in one part of the world could cause a societal uproar in another. so interesting - thanks for the tidbit!

my parents like to tell a story of when we moved from italy to the states ... the first time i ordered spaghetti vongale in a restaurant and it came with clams but no shells, i asked 'where is the vongale?' i would not believe the waiter who told us they were in the pasta !!
