About a year ago, our home looked as it does in these photos. Notice that besides the stairs being completely unfinished, the windows have yet to be installed. A host of other things remained undone. Determined to make the big move before August, this caused just a little bit of anxiety for us.

We had been working for about a year pushing the general contractor to finish the house; we purchased the unfinished house in August 2007. Pushing? I mean, we did his job and worked with all the subcontractors. It became clear that if the house was to be finished, then we would be instrumental in making that happen.

This is actually a redo of the stairs. When the wood guy came to do his part, he insisted that the stairs be redone. You can imagine the details of these exchanges.

Exhausted, we accepted a gracious offer from a friend of a week at a secluded timeshare in Tuscany, Borgo di Vagli, for the first week of summer vacation. It did help to relieve a bit of that anxiety, I must admit.

Because of Mr. Duncan's insistence and persistence, we closed on July 30, and we did make the big move in August. What a different year this has been for us!

Note: While most people reflect on the year gone by in December, I think it is a quite natural phenomenon for teachers to mark the end of the year in June & save reflections, both work-related and others, for then. Afterall, it's a cycle we've been in since we started kindergarten. Not a groundbreaking realization, I know. It did, however, first occur to me this morning. Sometimes I am admittedly slow. Anyhow. . . . .10 weeks. . . . .that's how much time we have until we start the new year!

I also refer to my life in school years. "At the end of the year (school year) well do _______." Sometimes when I'm trying to schdule something I let it slip that I'll still be in school and the person will look at me with an expression that says something like, "You're in school?"

Wow! You *have* come a long way in one year! Auguri ?! Can I say that for a one year house anniversary? Oh well, in 5 days my bad Italian will no longer be the same thorn in my side as it has been these last 4 years!
